Decimals in Action: Multiply and Divide Like a Pro!

Decimals in Action: Multiply and Divide Like a Pro!
Primary 5 Level
By Ms. Joanne De Chavez Campillos and Mr. Khongrit Ditanet

The goal of this lesson was to teach Primary 5 students on reading, writing, and converting decimals to fractions and vice versa through multiplication and division, and to apply these abilities in practical scenarios.
The lesson started with reading vocabulary words and a recap of previous lessons, focusing on the place value of whole numbers and decimals using a chart. The lesson was introduced with a clear explanation of how to read and write decimals, ensuring students understood the notation. The teacher demonstrated the conversion process, showing how multiplication and division can simplify or expand decimals into fractions by using denominators of 10, 100, 1000, or other powers of ten. Through interactive examples and hands-on activities, students practiced these conversions, reinforcing their understanding and boosting their confidence in handling decimals and fractions interchangeably.
The lesson was both effective and engaging. Students learned how to read, write, and convert decimals, showing enthusiasm and interest in the topic. They actively participated, demonstrating their understanding and skills through their answers and explanations, and applied their learning to real-life scenarios. The teacher provided clear guidance and feedback, praising the students’ efforts.
Moreover, the teacher and students assessed their learning and progress, identifying areas for enhancement and further practice. This lesson was impactful and meaningful, as students developed an essential mathematical skill and a practical life skill for everyday use.
