PROBLEM-SOLVING ANALYSIS: THE PATHWAY TO NEW DISCOVERIES
In mathematics, a task that provides intellectual challenge for enhancing students' mathematical understanding and development is through problem-solving. Problem-solving is a significant skill that every student must possess and develop. It helps solve word problems by integrating mathematical concepts in real-life scenarios giving them the attitude and necessary tools needed in dealing with the complexity of life. This aims at making the students ‘future ready’ by possessing the skills, knowledge, and positive outlook necessary in succeeding in tomorrow's world. With this, an activity focusing on enhancing students' abilities to think critically was put into the test. The main objective of this activity is to equip students with the ability to identify, analyse, and effectively resolve challenging problems which they may possibly encounter in the real world.
Spearheaded by the ICSE Maths teachers, Ms. Piyarat and Mr. Jay, the M3 students in MLP Program were challenged to solve problems related to the practical applications of trigonometry through the integration of mathematical principles and theorems of the six trigonometric ratios in right triangles. Together, they worked collaboratively and enthusiastically in order to obtain the unknown angles and distances given the known angles of some geometric figures. Our potential problem-solvers were motivated and actively engaged in solving and finding the best solution to the problems. They were able to analyse and identify the relevant trigonometric functions (sine, cosine, tangent) based on the given sides of a right triangle, then used the appropriate trigonometric ratio to set up an equation and solve for the unknown angle or side length.
With this activity, the students gained a deeper understanding of the beauty of trigonometry and the world around them. And with that, they understood and realised that proper analysis leads us to a pathway of new discoveries.
