Time Flies: A Guide to Mastering the 12-Hour and 24-Hour Clock
Primary 4 Level
By Ms. Joanne De Chavez
Campillos and Ms. Sukanya Khaosurat

The aim of this lesson was to teach the Primary 4 students how to read, write and convert time between analogue and digital 12-hour and 24-hour clocks. And to apply the conversion skills to real-life scenarios.
The lesson started with a vocabulary and recap of the previous lessons on telling the time using analogue and digital clocks and the use of a.m. and p.m. to indicate morning and afternoon. The teacher then introduced the concept of the 24-hour clock, explaining that it is a way of writing time using four digits without the need for a.m. or p.m. Secondly, she used various examples to show how the hours change from 12 to 24 as the day progresses and how to write the time in 24-hour format. Next, explain the rules for converting from 12-hour to 24-hour time and vice versa, such as adding or subtracting 12 from the hours after midday. And lastly, the teacher provided activities for recitation and then asked the students to work individually or in pairs to practice converting times between 12-hour and 24-hour formats.
This lesson was a successful and enjoyable one, as the students learned how to read, write, and convert time between analogue and digital 12-hour and 24-hour clocks. The students showed enthusiasm and interest in the topic and participated actively in the lesson. The students demonstrated their understanding and skills through their answers and explanations and applied their learning to real-life scenarios. The teacher provided clear and helpful guidance and feedback to the students, and she praised their efforts. The teacher and the students also reflected on their learning and progress and identified areas for improvement and further practice. The lesson was a valuable and meaningful one, as the students developed a key skill in mathematics as well as a useful life skill for everyday situations
