PE class for M.1 students By: Mr. Simon Marks

M1 students have spent the last 2 weeks throwing their heavy balls around the arena in an attempt to emulate the ancient sport of Shot put, with origins dating back to the first Olympics in ancient Greece around 776 BC. The modern form of shot put involves athletes throwing a heavy metal ball, called a shot, as far as they can within a circular throwing area with the objective being that the students must launch the shot using only one hand.

The throwing technique involves a combination of strength, speed, and precise coordination. Myself and Master Wattana have been teaching two styles: the glide technique and the spin technique. In the glide technique, the students move across the throwing circle, pushing the shot forward. The spin technique, on the other hand, involves a rotational movement, with the students spinning around the throwing circle before releasing the shot.

This field event has been very challenging for them due to the high degree of technical skill involved. However most students were able to show good skills and enjoyed the activity. Lessons ended with a test of knowledge and agility, and we are thankful to say that everyone survived the onslaught of flying balls!!
The upcoming months ahead will include field events such as The Discus and The High Jump with a touch of Gymnastics to boot!!
Keep controlling those balls students!!!
