Primary 6 students learn about food science and nutrition.
Primary 6 students studying under the iPSLE English Modern Language Program learn more about food and nutrition than they thought possible. Unit 3: A healthy Diet is the main topic of mid-July going into August.
Students learn about different food groups and food types, and what makes each group different from each other. But memorizing vocabulary isn’t what makes food science and nutrition interesting, it’s knowing how to use it and why we eat what we eat (listen to Mum and Dad, they’re feeding you the good stuff). We had our students work together and plan what ingredients they would use to cook for the family, and why they would choose those particular carbohydrates (energy-giving), vegetables (protective) and proteins + dairy (bodybuilding) for their family.
Last but not least, everyone needs to know what they are consuming, sometimes that takes the form of prepackaged and canned food. The skill and knowledge of reading and understanding nutritional labels is paramount. We showed primary 6 classes different labels and helped them understand how to calculate its calories, fat intake and other necessary information. Help them figure out how healthy or unhealthy their favourite snacks and canned/bagged goods at home are, and understand healthy food is just as good… if not better tasting than those prepacked snacks. Good fuel means good growth and positive attitudes.
