From Kitchen to Chemistry: Mathayom 1 Students Turn Chefs into Scientists!
Who knew your kitchen could double as a Chemistry lab? This week, our curious and creative Mathayom 1 students took on an exciting science challenge using the vibrant butterfly pea flower as a natural pH indicator to explore the acidic and basic properties of everyday household substances.
With purple-blue butterfly pea extract in hand, students came prepared with a variety of common items: baking soda, dishwashing soap, vinegar, lemon juice, and more, all the typical things you’d find at home, now repurposed for science! The experiment was simple yet eye-opening: just a few drops of the butterfly pea solution into each test substance, and voilà! — a magical color change revealed the substance's pH level.
Acids turned the flower extract pink to reddish, while bases shifted it to green or even turquoise. Eyes lit up with amazement as students witnessed firsthand how chemistry works beyond the classroom.
This hands-on activity didn’t just teach science it sparked curiosity, teamwork, and creativity. Who says learning can't be fun, colorful, and a little bit magical.
