Additional Opportunity for Students: Extra Credit Assignment

Master Taweesak Kaewsang and Miss Jubaiya Jahan recently introduced an exciting optional project for students in M4/1–M4/7, giving them the opportunity to earn three additional points toward their total score. This extra credit assignment challenged students to research the current global trade and stock exchange situation, then present their findings in the form of a news broadcast video. Students had the choice to work individually or in pairs with a classmate. The purpose of this project went beyond simply earning extra marks. It was designed to encourage students to engage with real-world economic issues, develop an interest in international current events, and gain research and presentation experience. By simulating a news broadcast, students practiced summarizing complex topics into clear, concise, and engaging formats, much like professional journalists.

Several students embraced the challenge and produced creative, well-researched, and professional-quality videos. Their presentations covered a wide range of relevant topics, including:

● The U.S. stock market and its recent trends.
● The current state of U.S. trade and tariff policies.
● The Thai stock market and Thailand’s present trade conditions.
● Broader perspectives on global trade relationships and how they impact different economies.

This assignment also served as a valuable tool for integrating English practice into academic learning. Since the ICSE Mathematics curriculum emphasizes not only mathematical proficiency but also strong English communication skills, the project provided a practical setting for students to improve their listening, speaking, and vocabulary while presenting complex ideas. While many students participated enthusiastically, it was observed that some students, particularly those with already high scores, chose not to take part. A few students who were less motivated also missed this opportunity. Based on this, Master Wee and Miss Jubaiya have decided to make similar projects compulsory in the future, ensuring that all students can benefit from the research, critical thinking, and communication skills such assignments provide.

This initiative demonstrated how cross-disciplinary learning, combining economics, mathematics, language, and media presentation, can help students not only improve academically but also develop a deeper understanding of the rapidly changing world around them.
