ACSP and Sikarin Hospital: Resilience
What is resilience and why is it important to bounce back?
On August 23rd, 2024, EP Discipline invited the Sikarin Medical Professionals to conduct a seminar about resilience for S.1-3 students.
This project aims to develop our students’ mental and emotional strength despite the struggles they may meet in life, whether in personal or social situations.
Strength differs in every individual. One person may embrace the tough times while another crumbles. It is important to teach our students how to be resilient even though life is unfavorable for us sometimes.
According to Michael Neenan, the author of “Developing Resilience: A Cognitive-Behavioural Approach”, resilient individuals going through significant life events do not always recover without effort; they often need to find a new path. Even when we are discouraged by what has happened, the darkest times still typically lead to growth and opportunities:
- A new or revised self-image - resilient people become aware of unexpected abilities as they rise to meet each new challenge.
- Enriched and clarified relationships - during difficult times, they recognize the friends who remain and offer support, those who do not or are toxic or draining, and prioritize positive relationships.
- Altered priorities - a new and possibly more focused perspective can remove what is unimportant and clarify and motivate meaningful values, life goals, and priorities.
A renewed purpose can also strengthen the resolve of those already resilient. “Studies have found that having a clear and valued purpose, and committing fully to a mission, can markedly strengthen one’s resilience” (Southwick & Charney, 2018, p. 251).
May all students remain resilient amidst difficulties. ACSP EP would like to thank Sikarin Hospital for collaborating with us on this Resilient Skills Project. Your effort and encouragement to our students is highly appreciated.
